I wasn’t too happy with The Musketeers #1 but decided to stick with it for an issue or two. This is due to the fact that veteran writer Terry Kavanagh is on the book along with artist Daniel Maine, one of my favorite artists in Zenescope’s stable.  Did the duo produce a second issue that would change my opinion of the first issue?

The unfortunate answer is no and I found The Musketeers #2 to be even more scatterbrained and off-putting than the first issue.  I’m not sure if it’s the writing, the concept, or the characters. It may be all three. It’s a shame to have this much talent on the book and yet be this unhappy with the final product.

My overview will be brief. The Musketeers are tasked with stealing a bracelet that has something to do with The Tarot. Except that these amateurs immediately draw the attention of the authorities who they start fighting.  They have no problem fighting the cops nor coming up with shabby fight dialogue. Worse off is they know it is shabby fight dialogue and mock themselves for it. Fair enough.

The issue also points out that here is a lot at stake for various people involved in the overall plot and that The Musketeers may ultimately just be pawns in this chess match.   There’s a bit of intrigue here but I’m not sure if all the shady dealings are intriguing enough for the reader at the moment.  There just seems to be a better story coming that is just alluded to in these first two issues.

Ultimately I think the characters and plot just aren’t melding together. I really love Daniel Maine’s gorgeous artwork and he at least makes The Musketeers look beautiful.  But artwork alone is not enough to save this issue. I think I’ll stick around for one more issue but if the book does t pick up I may be out for good.
