Kick-Ass #1

I never read any of the original Kick-Ass comics. Not that it didn’t look up my alley because the books totally did. I was there opening weekend for the movie and loved the hell out of it. Still didn’t read. Saw the second movie opening weekend and didn’t really like it. Still…didn’t read.

Then last Wednesday a new Kick-Ass series came out from Image Comics. Ordinarily I probably would have not read it like the rest of the Kick-Ass series I didn’t read. But I looked at the cover and was puzzled. There was Kick-Ass but it wasn’t that teenage white kid. It’s a black woman. A black woman? Okay. You got me. Sold. That’s enough for me to pick up the issue.

Issue One is a slight origin story though there’s not much to tell. Patience is ex-military who has returned home to find that her personal life is in shambles, she’s broke, and needs to support her family. Patience goes through a laundry list of ideas, mostly good (become a cop) to bad (re-enlist) to worse ideas (rob a bank).

Then she decides to fight crime. Beat up the bad guys. Rob from the rich and give to the poor….in this case herself. The identity she chooses? The same exact costume worn by the original Kick-Ass.

Writer Mark Miller does a great job of showing off Patience’s military time overseas, her family woes, and her first time out as Kick-Ass. All of this plot is woven together like a beautiful quilt. The result is a comic that really entertains. I really liked that I didn’t have to read all the past series to get this issue. I “got it all” from page one.

JRJ’s art? It looks like JRJ’s art. The man is a legend and I’ve always loved his amazing style. You look at ANY JRJ piece and you instantly know it’s him. Once again JRJ delivers the good.

Kick-Ass #1 really kicked major ass. It’s fun, intriguing, and the appearance of a new Kick-Ass really makes sense when taken in context of the story. I guess as I wait for #2 to come out I’ll have to read all the old issues. But as for this new Kick-Ass? I highly suggest seeking it out. One great read.
