Oh man. Holy crap. THIS ISSUE WAS INTENSE.

The saga of Aric of Earth as the New Emperor of the planet Azure has hit such a stunning turn with the release of issue #11.  In the previous issue we were introduced to a group of bounty hunters who get the band back together for one job: take out Aric.  Issue 10 was so amazing that I didn’t care what the bounty hunters had done previously.  I didn’t care who hired them.  All I wanted to see was them get in their spaceship and take on Azure’s most badass protector.

On Azure, poor Aric is fortifying positions while trying to deal with the constant death and starving citizens now under his reign. Being Emperor isn’t all about sitting on a golden throne surrounded by lovely women feeding you grapes. It’s some hard work that weighs heavy on Aric’s mind.  It’s once again easy to point out that Aric can take on any foe but in taking down the old Emperor he suddenly finds himself ruling a world he was not quite prepared to rule.

And then? Then the bounty hunters arrive. The fight? Brilliant. Beyond brilliant. Everything that I wanted from this standoff and more. Did I want the bounty hunters to show up and have Aric quickly dispatch them? No. I wanted a brawl. I wanted these badass bounty hunters to arrive and totally kick Aric’s ass. Aric is such a badass that you would think this could never happen. But with Rawn and his bounty hunter team taking on Aric, it may finally be a fight the human cannot win. Beyond that there are sinister forces at work behind the scenes that Aric isn’t aware of. Of course that’s the case! Someone had to hire the bounty hunters, right?

One of the best comics of 2017 hits 2018 running at full speed. Matt Kindt delivers yet another brilliant issue that had me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. If X-O Manowar can keep up this brilliant pace for the rest of the year, Valiant may find themselves with the #1 book of 2018. One can only hope this is the case.
