I really loved the first issue of Barbarella and was really looking forward to some sexy sci-fi space adventure with issue #2. While we don’t get back to outer space we do have some fun with Barbarella running from the law after breaking out of prison with the super hot half robot lady named Jury.

Issue #1 ended with a bit of a cliffhanger but (in a kind of spoiler but not really a spoiler because you know Barbarella isn’t going to die in the first pages of issue #2) the duo evades death and make their way to the planet’s surface so Jury can complete her mission.

The two dress up like nuns (not lying) and walk through this once spacious spaceport that now looks like a war torn hellhole of a planet. Most of the issue has Barbarella and Jury evading police, traversing the city, and trying to get to Jury’s end point. The end point? Somehow stop some sort of doomsday device.

Things are never what they seem in this book and the first two issues really hammer that fact home. There’s twists and turns coming with every turn of the page thanks to some fabulous storytelling here by Mike Carey. I’m truly 100% invested in this story and, once again, Carey proves he knows how to end an issue on a high note. If you read issue 2 it makes you have to read issue #3. There’s no way to read that ending and go, “Meh, I don’t care what happens.” If you do, you probably have no soul.

I’ll once again point out Kenan Yarar’s gorgeous artwork as it really has a nice Moebius-like quality to it. It feels a bit European in nature which is good considering the original source material. While I was never the biggest fan of the Jane Fonda adaptation from the sixties, I will say that this comic is a fantastic read. I love that Dynamite Comics hasn’t shied away from it being more adult fare and it really works without feeling forced.

I throughly enjoyed Barbarella #2 – just as much as the first issue. Plenty of thrills. Lots of action. Great writing. Sexy gals. You really can’t ask for more in a comic. As this issue ended the way it did I know I will absolutely be back with a review of issue #3.
