Well here we are.  X-O Manowar #5.  Let me backtrack for just a moment.

X-O Manowar #1 is the biggest selling independent comic of 2017 (thus far).  The relaunch of X-O brought a whole slew of new fans to Valiant Comics who seemed intrigued by what Valiant is publishing this summer.  As I continued to read other comics in the Valiant line I’ve been completely blown away by Harbinger: Renegade, Rapture, and Faith and the Future Force.

But X-O?  I’ve liked the story a lot but as each and every subsequent issue has come out I’ve grown a bit more…perturbed.  Why?  Well the story that Matt Kindt has dreamed up has seen Aric on an alien planet helping one guy to overthrow another guy so this guy can rule and this guy can’t.  We’ve seen lots of battles, lots of blood, and lots of Aric, as the leader, thrown into the fray – ready to fight and kill.

And the X-O Manowar armor?  You know…the armor that the series is named after?  The point of this comic is that this warrior Visigoth was abducted from 402 AD only to obtain one of the most powerful weapons in the whole universe.  A living robotic suit of armor.  Worn by a man who had never even seen a machine.  And guess what?  Aric fights.  Aric kills.  Aric maims.  Aric leads.  Aric does not use the X-O Manowar armor.

At this point I just feel like Veruca Salt.  Seriously.  I want the works.  I want the whole works.  Presents and prizes and sweets and surprises of all shapes and sizes and now.  Don’t care how.  I want it now.

Put the man in the suit of armor and let’s show these yahoos on the planet Gorin what real power is.

So here is issue 5 and what does issue 5 bring?  If you said, “The same thing as last issue with Aric leading a fight trying to kill the president without his suit of armor.” you are correct.  What do you win for being correct?  Let’s use another Willy Wonka meme, won’t we?

I guess the good news here is there is finally some resolution to the past couple issues.  Over and over we’ve seen Aric jump into battle and it is finally the time where Aric enjoys the spoils of war.  At its core X-O Manowar #5 is another long battle in the war for Aric.  But as there is resolution we finally see a success….of sorts.  But even in victory it doesn’t actually mean that Aric is done with this war.  There is more to the mission, of course.

And do you know what?  Not to spoil anything but this big battle that Aric partakes in…does he wear the armor?  No.  No he doesn’t.

I’m not going to spoil the end of this issue but Kindt finally writes something that satisfies me.  He takes some steps that will finally make me smile.  But the fruits of that labor don’t truly come out in this issue.  For all of that I’ll have to wait for X-O Manowar #6.  I think.  I hope.  This series is great but it really has been a DT.

Hopefully the asskicking will be coming shortly.  If not, Aric and I will have to have a conversation and it is one that he is not going to like.  Man up, Aric.  Let’s get this show on the road.
