This will be a pretty quick, easy, and painless review of the Yobo FC-16 Go Portable SNES System.  It’s purpose?  To play SNES games on the go.  It promises, “The FC-16 Go combines SNES gaming functionality and portability into one convenient gaming system, perfect for on-the-go or at home gaming experience. You can play SNES games directly on the FC-16 through its huge 3.5″ LCD display, or connect the TV output cable to your TV for all to see.”

Sounds great, right?

My kid purchased this system with the hopes of being able to play his favorite SNES game on the go.  That game is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.  It’s his FAVORITE.  His thoughts?  Now he can play it on the go wherever he goes.  Sounds like a great idea.

I wish I had been there when he bought it.  Looking at this piece of junk from the box alone tells me that we should have done the purchasing together.  But he did this on his own.

Initially the system worked fine.  He plugged Super Mario RPG in and was able to play on to go.

Then something funny happened.  He turned on the system and he got a black screen.

He tried it again.  Black screen.

We tried several things at this point.  Making sure the battery of the system was fully charged.  Though we always clean the carts when we purchase them I cleaned it again just in case.

After several tries the system finally decided to boot up the game.  But guess what happened?

ALL of the save data was gone.  Everything the kid worked hard for was deleted.

My kid is vigilant.  He looked at me and said, “It’s okay.  I’ll get back to where I was.”  He loves the game so I don’t blame him.

I DO blame this crappy system.  I have zero clue on how a system like this could erase save data like this.  Does it dump the ROM?  I don’t believe so – the kid was able to save his game previously.  So I’m not sure where the trouble lies.  All I know is that it pissed me off.

So looking for a portable SNES system?  Go look at the systems by Hyperkin or Retro-Bit.  I’ve tried neither of these systems but I’m sure they are light years ahead of whatever crap Yobo is putting out.  Those products are probably $30.00 more that the FC-16 Go – but if you are near the end of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past do you really want to come back to find your game gone?
